The New Yorker uses cover art painted by artist Jorge Colombo using an iPhone app, Brushes.  The video above shows the progression of Jorge’s work on the app.  What makes it interesting is that if you saw the cover on the newsstand, you would never know that is was done on an iPhone app.  Does this sell any more issues?  Maybe not, but at least I noticed the New Yorker this week because of the press. =)  Probably works a few times as a buzz generator.
